Daniel Kaplan was President and an owner of Cloverleaf Cold Storage Co., headquartered in Sioux City, Iowa. When he joined the company in 1989, Cloverleaf was the 25th largest refrigerated warehouse company in North America, according to the industry trade group, with facilities in four locations in Iowa and Minnesota. When the company was sold to Americold in 2019, Cloverleaf had replaced all its legacy facilities and grown to the fourth largest cold storage warehouse company in North America with operations in nine states.
Prior to joining Cloverleaf, Kaplan practiced law in the field of corporate finance as an associate in the Chicago office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meaghor & Flom. He was previously law clerk to Justice Seymour Simon of the Illinois Supreme Court. Kaplan graduated with honors from the University of Chicago Law School in 1985, where he also served as an editor of the Law Review. He studied political science as an honors student at The Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, earning a B.A. in 1983.
Since 2021, Kaplan has served as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the World Food Logistics Organization, a 501(c)(3) foundation which is dedicated to education, research and international development in promotion of the global cold chain. He has conducted assessments of the cold chain in developing countries for the United States Department of Agriculture. Kaplan also served six years as President of the Sioux City, Iowa, Airport Board of Trustees overseeing reconstruction of the airline terminal building and primary runway; during his term, both American Airlines and Frontier Airlines introduced service to that tertiary market.
